Kings II
Menashe was twelve years old when he became king; he reigned for fifty-five years in Jerusalem, and his mother’s name was Heftzi Ba.
He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, like the abominations of the nations whom the Lord had dispossessed before the children of Israel.
He rebuilt the shrines that Hizkiyahu his father had eliminated. He erected altars to the Baal, and he made a sacred tree, as Ahav king of Israel had done, and he prostrated himself to all the host of the heavens and worshipped them.
Furthermore, he built altars for idolatrous worship in the House of the Lord of which the Lord said: In Jerusalem I will place My name.
He built altars for all the host of the heavens in the two courtyards of the House of the Lord, in the inner and outer courtyards.
He passed his son through the fire, engaged in soothsaying, the practice of predicting the future or deriving practical advice based on the shapes of the clouds or the time of year, divined, and used a medium and oracles, bringing spirits from the dead in order to tell the future.
He placed the idol of the sacred tree that he had crafted in the House of which the Lord said to David and to Solomon his son: In this House, and in Jerusalem, which I chose from all the tribes of Israel, I will place My name forever.
I will not continue to cause the feet of Israel to wander from the land that I gave their fathers, provided that they will take care to act in accordance with everything that I commanded them and in accordance with the entire Torah that My servant Moses commanded them.
But they did not listen, and Menashe has led them astray to perform more evil than the nations that the Lord destroyed from before the children of Israel.
The Lord spoke by means of His servants, the prophets, saying:
Because Menashe king of Judah performed these abominations, and he did more evil than all the evil that the Emorites, who preceded him, had done, and he also caused Judah to sin with his idols that he worshipped,
therefore, so said the Lord, God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing harm upon Jerusalem and Judah so that all who hear it, his two ears will ring, as they do upon hearing an extremely loud and frightening noise.
I will extend over Jerusalem the plumb line with which I measured the sins and the punishment of Samaria, and the scale used to weigh the sins of the house of Ahav, which was destroyed for its sins; I will wipe Jerusalem as a man wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down, so that nothing remains in it.
I will abandon the remnant of My inheritance, and I will deliver them into the hand of their enemies; and they will become plunder and spoils to all their enemies,
because they did evil in My eyes and have been angering Me from the day that their fathers came out of Egypt to this day. Although the Kingdom of Judah became much worse during Menashe’s time, the residents of Judah had not listened to the word of God or lived up to His expectations of them even before Hizkiyahu’s time. Consequently, the Kingdom of Judah was doomed to destruction and its people to exile, in the same way as the Kingdom of Israel.
Moreover, Menashe shed very much innocent blood, until he filled Jerusalem with blood from end to end in order to fulfill his personal goals and aspirations; besides the sin of idolatry that he caused Judah to sin, to do evil in the eyes of the Lord.
The rest of the matters of Menashe, everything that he did, and his sin that he sinned, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
Menashe
Amon was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned for two years in Jerusalem; his mother’s name was Meshulemet daughter of Harutz of Yotva.
He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, like Menashe his father had done.
He followed all the ways that his father had gone, and he worshipped the false gods that his father had worshipped, and he prostrated himself to them.
He forsook the Lord, God of his fathers, and did not follow the way of the Lord.
The servants of Amon conspired against him, and they put the king to death in his house, perhaps because his behavior generated greater animosity toward him.
The people of the land smote all the conspirators against King Amon; and the people of the land naturally crowned Yoshiyahu his son king in his place.
The rest of the matters of Amon that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
He was buried in his grave in the garden of Uza, where his father, Menashe, was buried; and Yoshiyahu his son reigned in his place.
