וַיִּפְשַׁע מוֹאָב בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל אַחֲרֵי מוֹת אַחְאָב

Moav rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahav, refusing to pay taxes to the king of Israel as they had done previously. The details of the declaration of their revolt and Moav’s full independence are clarified in chapter 3 below. The rebellion is mentioned briefly here as part of the critique of Ahav’s sons.

וַיִּפֹּל אֲחַזְיָה בְּעַד הַשְּׂבָכָה בַּעֲלִיָּתוֹ אֲשֶׁר בְּשֹׁמְרוֹן וַיָּחַל וַיִּשְׁלַח מַלְאָכִים וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם לְכוּ דִרְשׁוּ בְּבַעַל זְבוּב אֱלֹהֵי עֶקְרוֹן אִם־אֶחְיֶה מֵחֳלִי זֶה

Ahazya son of Ahav fell through the lattice in his upper chamber that was in his house in Samaria, and was injured. He sent messengers and said to them: Go on my behalf and inquire of Baal Zevuv, the idol of creeping, crawling creatures, god of the Philistine city of Ekron, whether I will recover from this injury. Ahazya sensed that his life was in danger.

וּמַלְאַךְ ה' דִּבֶּר אֶל־אֵלִיָּה הַתִּשְׁבִּי קוּם עֲלֵה לִקְרַאת מַלְאֲכֵי מֶלֶךְ־שֹׁמְרוֹן וְדַבֵּר אֲלֵהֶם הֲמִבְּלִי אֵין־אֱלֹהִים בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל אַתֶּם הֹלְכִים לִדְרֹשׁ בְּבַעַל זְבוּב אֱלֹהֵי עֶקְרוֹן

An angel of the Lord spoke with Elijah the Tishbite: Rise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and state to them: Is there no God in Israel that you feel you must go to inquire of Baal Zevuv, god of Ekron?

וְלָכֵן כֹּה־אָמַר ה' הַמִּטָּה אֲשֶׁר־עָלִיתָ שָּׁם לֹא־תֵרֵד מִמֶּנָּה כִּי מוֹת תָּמוּת וַיֵּלֶךְ אֵלִיָּה

Therefore, so said the Lord: You will not come off the bed onto which you have gone up, for you will die; and Elijah went to inform Ahazya’s messengers of God’s statement.

וַיָּשׁוּבוּ הַמַּלְאָכִים אֵלָיו וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם מַה־זֶּה שַׁבְתֶּם

The messengers returned to him, and he, the king, said to them: Why have you returned so quickly? The king realized that they could not have gone all the way to Ekron and back in the time they were gone.

וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו אִישׁ עָלָה לִקְרָאתֵנוּ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלֵינוּ לְכוּ שׁוּבוּ אֶל־הַמֶּלֶךְ אֲשֶׁר־שָׁלַח אֶתְכֶם וְדִבַּרְתֶּם אֵלָיו כֹּה אָמַר ה' הֲמִבְּלִי אֵין־אֱלֹהִים בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל אַתָּה שֹׁלֵחַ לִדְרֹשׁ בְּבַעַל זְבוּב אֱלֹהֵי עֶקְרוֹן לָכֵן הַמִּטָּה אֲשֶׁר־עָלִיתָ שָּׁם לֹא־תֵרֵד מִמֶּנָּה כִּי־מוֹת תָּמוּת

They said to him: A man came up to meet us and said to us: Go, return to the king who sent you, and speak with him: So said the Lord: Is there no God in Israel that you send to inquire of Baal Zevuv, god of Ekron? Therefore, you will not come off the bed onto which you have gone up, for you will die. His statement made an impression upon us, and therefore we returned to inform you of it.

וַיְדַבֵּר אֲלֵהֶם מֶה מִשְׁפַּט הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר עָלָה לִקְרַאתְכֶם וַיְדַבֵּר אֲלֵיכֶם אֶת־הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה

He, the king, said to them: What is the description of the man who went up to meet you, and spoke these words to you? How did he act, and what did he look like? Describe him.

וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו אִישׁ בַּעַל שֵׂעָר וְאֵזוֹר עוֹר אָזוּר בְּמָתְנָיו וַיֹּאמַר אֵלִיָּה הַתִּשְׁבִּי הוּא

They said to him: He was a hairy man, and a leather belt was girded around his waist. He said: It is Elijah the Tishbite, as he always looks like that.

וַיִּשְׁלַח אֵלָיו שַׂר־חֲמִשִּׁים וַחֲמִשָּׁיו וַיַּעַל אֵלָיו וְהִנֵּה יֹשֵׁב עַל־רֹאשׁ הָהָר וַיְדַבֵּר אֵלָיו אִישׁ הָאֱלֹהִים הַמֶּלֶךְ דִּבֶּר רֵדָה

He, King Ahazya, sent a commander of fifty with his unit of fifty men after him. He went up to him, and behold, he, Elijah, was sitting on top of the mountain. He, the captain, spoke with him: Man of God, the king has spoken: Come down. The king commands that you descend from that mountain and come to him.

וַיַּעֲנֶה אֵלִיָּהוּ וַיְדַבֵּר אֶל־שַׂר הַחֲמִשִּׁים וְאִם אִישׁ אֱלֹהִים אָנִי תֵּרֶד אֵשׁ מִן־הַשָּׁמַיִם וְתֹאכַל אֹתְךָ וְאֶת־חֲמִשֶּׁיךָ וַתֵּרֶד אֵשׁ מִן־הַשָּׁמַיִם וַתֹּאכַל אֹתוֹ וְאֶת־חֲמִשָּׁיו

Elijah answered and said to the commander of fifty: If I am indeed a man of God, as you say, let fire descend from the heavens and consume you and your fifty men. Fire descended from the heavens, and utterly consumed him and his fifty men.

וַיָּשָׁב וַיִּשְׁלַח אֵלָיו שַׂר־חֲמִשִּׁים אַחֵר וַחֲמִשָּׁיו וַיַּעַן וַיְדַבֵּר אֵלָיו אִישׁ הָאֱלֹהִים כֹּה־אָמַר הַמֶּלֶךְ מְהֵרָה רֵדָה

When the king heard that the first mission had been unsuccessful, he sent after him again, another commander of fifty with his fifty men. He addressed him and said: Man of God, so said the king: Come down quickly. This was a more vigorous order: The king commands that you descend without delay.

וַיַּעַן אֵלִיָּה וַיְדַבֵּר אֲלֵיהֶם אִם־אִישׁ הָאֱלֹהִים אָנִי תֵּרֶד אֵשׁ מִן־הַשָּׁמַיִם וְתֹאכַל אֹתְךָ וְאֶת־חֲמִשֶּׁיךָ וַתֵּרֶד אֵשׁ־אֱלֹהִים מִן־הַשָּׁמַיִם וַתֹּאכַל אֹתוֹ וְאֶת־חֲמִשָּׁיו

Elijah responded and said to them: If I am a man of God, let fire descend from the heavens, and consume you and your fifty. Fire of God descended from the heavens, and consumed him and his fifty men.

וַיָּשָׁב וַיִּשְׁלַח שַׂר־חֲמִשִּׁים שְׁלִשִׁים וַחֲמִשָּׁיו וַיַּעַל וַיָּבֹא שַׂר־הַחֲמִשִּׁים הַשְּׁלִישִׁי וַיִּכְרַע עַל־בִּרְכָּיו לְנֶגֶד אֵלִיָּהוּ וַיִּתְחַנֵּן אֵלָיו וַיְדַבֵּר אֵלָיו אִישׁ הָאֱלֹהִים תִּיקַר־נָא נַפְשִׁי וְנֶפֶשׁ עֲבָדֶיךָ אֵלֶּה חֲמִשִּׁים בְּעֵינֶיךָ

Again, he, the king, sent a third commander of fifty with his fifty. The third commander of fifty went up; he came and knelt before Elijah and pleaded with him and spoke with him: Man of God, please, may my life and the life of your servants, these fifty, be worthy in your eyes. Please take our lives into account.

הִנֵּה יָרְדָה אֵשׁ מִן־הַשָּׁמַיִם וַתֹּאכַל אֶת־שְׁנֵי שָׂרֵי הַחֲמִשִּׁים הָרִאשֹׁנִים וְאֶת־חֲמִשֵּׁיהֶם וְעַתָּה תִּיקַר נַפְשִׁי בְּעֵינֶיךָ

Behold, fire descended from the heavens, and it consumed the first two commanders of fifty with their fifties, but now, may my life be worthy in your eyes.

וַיְדַבֵּר מַלְאַךְ ה' אֶל־אֵלִיָּהוּ רֵד אוֹתוֹ אַל־תִּירָא מִפָּנָיו וַיָּקָם וַיֵּרֶד אוֹתוֹ אֶל־הַמֶּלֶךְ

The angel of the Lord spoke to Elijah: Go down with him; do not fear him. He rose and went down with him to the king.

וַיְדַבֵּר אֵלָיו כֹּה־אָמַר ה' יַעַן אֲשֶׁר־שָׁלַחְתָּ מַלְאָכִים לִדְרֹשׁ בְּבַעַל זְבוּב אֱלֹהֵי עֶקְרוֹן הֲמִבְּלִי אֵין־אֱלֹהִים בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל לִדְרֹשׁ בִּדְבָרוֹ לָכֵן הַמִּטָּה אֲשֶׁר־עָלִיתָ שָּׁם לֹא־תֵרֵד מִמֶּנָּה כִּי־מוֹת תָּמוּת

He, Elijah, spoke to him, the king, the same prophecy as before: So said the Lord: Since you sent messengers to inquire of Baal Zevuv, god of Ekron – is there no God in Israel to inquire of His word? – therefore, you will not come off the bed upon which you have gone up, for you will die.

וַיָּמָת כִּדְבַר־ה' אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּר אֵלִיָּהוּ וַיִּמְלֹךְ יְהוֹרָם תַּחְתָּיו בִּשְׁנַת שְׁתַּיִם לִיהוֹרָם בֶּן־יְהוֹשָׁפָט מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה כִּי לֹא־הָיָה לוֹ בֵּן

He, Ahazya, indeed died in accordance with the word of the Lord that Elijah had spoken. His brother Yehoram became king in his place, during the second year of Yehoram son of Yehoshafat king of Judah, because he, Ahazya, did not have a son.

וְיֶתֶר דִּבְרֵי אֲחַזְיָהוּ אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה הֲלוֹא־הֵמָּה כְתוּבִים עַל־סֵפֶר דִּבְרֵי הַיָּמִים לְמַלְכֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל
