Aliya 5

These ten words the Lord spoke to your entire assembly at the mountain from the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the fog, a great voice that did not cease. Although God did not continue to speak, the noise continued. And He inscribed them on two stone tablets, and He gave them to me.

RASHI

It was when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, and the mountain was burning with fire, that you approached me, all the heads of your tribes, and your elders.

You said in fear: Behold, the Lord our God has shown us His glory and His greatness, and His voice we heard from the midst of the fire; this day we have seen that God will speak with man, and he may live.

And now, why should we die, when this great, unusual fire will consume us? If we continue to hear the voice of the Lord our God, we shall die. This voice, which emanates from above and beyond this world, is making contact with us in some manner, but we are concerned that we cannot survive if we continue to hear it.

For who of all flesh that heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire like us, has lived?

You, Moses, approach and hear everything that the Lord our God will say; and you will speak to us everything that the Lord our God will speak to you, and we will hear it and we will perform it.

RASHI

The Lord heard the sound of your words upon your speaking to me; and the Lord said to me: I heard the sound of the words of this people that they spoke to you; they did well in everything that they spoke.

Would that this heart shall be for them to fear Me and to observe all My commandments for all days, so that it will be good for them and for their children forever. Within the conditions allowing the world to exist, there are numerous situations in which God conceals His presence, and only with great difficulty can a person recognize and fulfill his responsibilities. It is even more rare that a person’s descendants will succeed in achieving this goal.

Go say to them: Return to your tents, to the regular responsibilities and lifestyle of married people.

But you, Moses, stand here with Me, and do not return to regular daily life like the rest of the people. You must abstain from normal worldly activities, including relations with your wife. And I will speak to you all the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances that you will teach them, and they will perform them in the land that I am giving them to take possession of it.

You shall take care to act as the Lord your God commanded you; you shall not deviate right or left. You shall fulfill the commandments with the same awe and fear as you would have had you heard all of them directly from the voice of God.

In the entire path that the Lord your God commanded you, you shall walk. You received the gift of the Torah, and you must now uphold its sanctity, as well as that of your new elevated status, so that you will live, and that it will be good for you, and you will extend your days in the land of which you will take possession.

And this is the commandment, the statutes, and the ordinances that the Lord your God commanded to teach you, to perform them in the land into which you are crossing to take possession of it

so that you will fear the Lord your God, to observe all His statutes and His commandments that I am commanding you: You, your son, and your son’s son, all the days of your life; and so that your days will be extended, and there will be continuity of the nation of Israel.

You shall hear, Israel, and you shall take care to perform, so that it will be good for you, and so that you will increase greatly, as the Lord, the God of your forefathers, spoke to you, and you will experience this goodness in a land flowing with milk and honey. You are about to enter the good land and live a normal life there. If you fulfill your responsibilities, I will ensure that you have plentiful food and other necessities.
