Hanukkah
Publicizing the MiracleThe Sages established the order of priority for one who cannot afford to fulfill the mitzva of Hanukkah lights and the mitzvot of Shabbat: lighting the Shabbat candles and reciting Kiddush over wine.
Rava said: It is obvious to me that if one must choose between purchasing oil to kindle a Shabbat lamp for his home or oil for a Hanukkah lamp, oil for the Shabbat lamp for his home takes precedence, due to harmony in his home. If there is a conflict between buying oil for a lamp for his home and wine for Kiddush, sanctification of the day, oil for the lamp for his home takes precedence, due to harmony in his home.
Rava raised a dilemma: When the conflict is between oil for a Hanukkah lamp and wine for Kiddush of the day, what is the halakha? Does wine for Kiddush of the day take priority because it is frequent, or perhaps oil for the Hanukkah lamp takes precedence, due to the requirement for publicizing the miracle? After he raised the dilemma, he then resolved it: Oil for the Hanukkah lamp takes precedence due to publicizing the miracle.
