The Sages disagree as to the precise nature of the sukkot in which the Israelites resided when they left Egypt, in commemoration of which we are commanded to reside in sukkot throughout the festival.

“So that your generations will know that I had the children of Israel live in booths [sukkot], when I took them out of the land of Egypt” (Leviticus 23:43). Rabbi Eliezer says: These were actual booths; Rabbi Akiva says: They were booths of clouds of glory. (Sifra, Emor 12)
