Rosh HaShana

A Statute for Israel, a Law of the God of Jacob

Israel’s Day of Judgment differs from standard trials. Typically, a person is concerned about an impending court case, whereas Israel places its trust in the kindness of the Judge, and even determines and proclaims the date of the trial.

Rabbi Hama ben Rabbi Hanina, and Rabbi Hoshaya; one said: What nation is like this nation! Typically, a person who knows that he has a trial will wear black garments and wrap himself in black robes, and grow his beard, as he does not know the outcome of his trial. But regarding Israel it is not so. Rather, they wear white and wrap themselves in white, and shave their beards, and eat and drink and rejoice, as they know that the Holy One, blessed be He, performs miracles for them.

The other said: What nation is like this nation! Typically, if the authorities say: The trial is today, and the armed robbers say: The trial is tomorrow, to whom do we listen? Don’t we listen to the authorities? But regarding the Holy One, blessed be He, it is not so: If the court said: Today is Rosh HaShana, the Holy One, blessed be He, says to the ministering angels: Erect a platform, let the advocates stand, and let the prosecutors stand, as My children have said: Today is Rosh HaShana.

If the court reconsiders to make the previous month full and to postpone Rosh HaShana to the following day, the Holy One, blessed be He, says to the ministering angels: Remove the platform, remove the advocates, and remove the prosecutors, as My children have reconsidered to make the previous month full and to postpone Rosh HaShana to tomorrow. (Jerusalem Talmud, Rosh HaShana 1:3)
