Shabbat
Delight in Shabbat – Material and SpiritualThere is a mitzva stated by the prophets to delight in Shabbat. The Sages disagree whether the central objective of refraining from labor on Shabbat is for this delight, or whether its primary objective is Torah study, while delighting in Shabbat is secondary. In any case, the proper way to sanctify Shabbat is by delighting in and honoring the day, and one who delights in Shabbat merits a great reward.
Rabbi Hiyya bar Abba says: Shabbat was given only for delight. Rabbi Haggai says in the name of Rabbi Shmuel bar Nahman: Shabbat was given only for Torah study.
They do not disagree: What Rabbi Berekhya said in the name of Rabbi Hiyya bar Abba, that Shabbat was given only for delight, is regarding Torah scholars who immerse themselves in Torah throughout the days of the week, and on Shabbat they come and delight in the holy day. What Rabbi Haggai said in the name of Rabbi Shmuel bar Nahman, that Shabbat was given for Torah study, is regarding laborers who are engaged in their labor all the days of the week, and on Shabbat they come and engage in Torah study.
Rabbi Yehoshua of Sakhnim says in the name of Rabbi Levi: When anyone who delights in Shabbat asks for something from God, the Holy One, blessed be He, grants him his request. What is the reason? “Take pleasure in the Lord, and He will grant you the desires of your heart” (Psalms 37:4).
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8): In what way does one keep it holy? One does so through study of Bible and Mishna, through food and drink, and clean garments.
Rabbi Yohanan said in the name of Rabbi Yosei: As for anyone who delights the Shabbat, God gives him a boundless inheritance.
