Yosef Who Cherished Shabbat

The Sages relate a story about a man who made great efforts to buy choice foods in honor of Shabbat. He eventually merited enormous wealth due to his piety in this regard.

Regarding Yosef who cherished Shabbat: There was a gentile in his neighborhood who owned a great deal of property. The astrologers said to him: Yosef, who cherishes Shabbat, will acquire all your property.

That gentile went and sold all his property, and with the proceeds he purchased a pearl, which he placed in his hat. While he was crossing a river in a ferry, the wind blew the hat into the water and a fish swallowed it. Fishermen removed the fish from the water and brought it ashore at nightfall on Shabbat eve. The fishermen said: Who will buy fish at this hour? The townspeople said to them: Go bring it to Yosef who cherishes Shabbat, as he regularly purchases items for Shabbat even at this hour. They brought it to him. He purchased it, ripped the fish open and inside it he found a pearl, which he then sold for thirteen vessels filled with gold. A certain elderly man encountered him and declared: For one who borrows money to purchase items to honor Shabbat, Shabbat repays him. (Shabbat 119a)
