Prophecy

Prophecy Today and in the Messianic Era

Prophecy, as it existed in biblical times, no longer exists. Nevertheless, the Sages note several situations and contexts that contain characteristics of prophecy. In the messianic era, the spirit of God will imbue everything, and all the Jews will be worthy of prophecy.

Rabbi Yohanan said: If one awoke early in the morning and a verse happened into his mouth, this is a minor prophecy.

Rabbi Avdimi from Haifa says: From the day that the Temple was destroyed, prophecy was taken from the prophets and given to the Sages…. Rabbi Yohanan said: From the day that the Temple was destroyed, prophecy was taken from the prophets and given to imbeciles and small children.

The Holy One, blessed be He, said: In this world, individuals prophesied, but in the World to Come all Israel will become prophets, as it is stated: “Thereafter, it shall be that I will pour My spirit upon all flesh and your sons and your daughters will prophesy; your elders will dream dreams; your young men will see visions” (Joel 3:1).
