Health and Illness

The Doctor

A sick person is obligated to try to be cured. Therefore, one must not live in a place where there is no doctor, and likewise one must hire a skilled doctor, regardless of the cost.

“And he shall provide healing” (Exodus 21:19). It is derived from here that permission is granted to a doctor to heal.

A Torah scholar is not permitted to reside in any city that does not have these ten features: …a doctor.

A doctor who heals for nothing is worth nothing…a distant doctor will cause the eye to go blind.

Rabbi Elazar ben Pedat said: As the parable says: Honor your doctor before you need him.

The best of doctors is destined for Gehenna. (Bava Kamma 85a; Sanhedrin 17b; Shemot Rabba 21; Mishna Kiddushin 4:14)
