The Land of Israel

The Right to the Land

The Land of Israel belongs to the Jewish people, not by force of conquest but as a gift from the Creator of the world, who allocated it to His children.

“He tells the power of His deeds to His people, to give them the portion of nations” (Psalms 111:6). For what reason did the Holy One, blessed be He, reveal to Israel what was created on the first day and what was created on the second day? It is due to the nations of the world, so that they would not upset Israel and say to them: Aren’t you a nation of plunderers? Israel can respond to them and say to them: The Land of Israel was first plundered by you, as “Kaftorim, who emerged from Kaftor, destroyed them, and settled in their place” (Deuteronomy 2:23). The world and all that it holds belong to the Holy One, blessed be He; when He wished, He gave the Land of Israel to you, and when He wished, He took it from you and gave it to us. This is the meaning of what is written: “He tells the power of His deeds to His people, to give them the portion of nations”: He told them of all the generations. (Bereshit Rabba 1)
