Husband and Wife

Love and Honor

A man is commanded by the Sages to be vigilant regarding his wife’s honor, and to be attentive and sensitive to her needs.

The Sages taught: One who loves his wife as himself, and who honors her more than himself, and who instructs his sons and daughters in an upright path, and who marries them near the time when they reach maturity [marriageable age], the verse says about him: “You will know that your tent is at peace” (Job 5:24).

Rav says: A person must always be careful not to mistreat his wife. Since her tears are easily generated, punishment for her mistreatment is immediate…. And Rabbi Helbo says: A person must always be vigilant in honoring his wife, for blessing is found in a person’s house only thanks to his wife, as it is stated: “And he benefited Abram for her sake, he acquired sheep, oxen” (Genesis 12:16). That is what Rava said to the residents of Mehoza: Honor your wives, so that you will become wealthy.

A person should always eat and drink less than the means at his disposal, and he should dress and cover himself in accordance with the means at his disposal, and he should honor his wife and children with more than the means at his disposal – as they are dependent on him, and he is dependent on the One who spoke and the world came into being. (Yevamot 62b; Bava Metzia 89a; Ĥullin 84b)
