The Land Is DearThe Torah portion tells of the preparations for entry into the Land of Israel. The Sages note how precious the Land of Israel is, and how appropriate it is that Israel inherit it.
The Holy One, Blessed be He, said to Moses: This land is precious to Me…and Israel is precious to Me…the Holy One, Blessed be He, said to him: I will bring My children who are precious to Me into a land that is precious to Me. “This shall be the land that will fall to you as an inheritance” (Numbers 34:2). What is the meaning of “to you”? It is fitting for you. This can be explained by means of a parable of a king who had slaves and maidservants, and he would marry his slaves to maidservants from another estate. The king arose and thought, and he said: I have slaves and I have maidservants; it is preferable that I marry my slaves to my maidservants. So the Holy One, Blessed be He, said: The land is Mine…and Israel is Mine…It is preferable that I bequeath My land to My servants, to My people. That is why it is stated: “This shall be the land that will fall to you as an inheritance” (34:2).
