The modesty of the Israelites in their residences caused Bilam to praise and exalt them.

“Bilam raised his eyes, and he saw Israel dwelling according to its tribes” (Numbers 24:2). What did he see? He saw that the entrances of their tents were not aligned opposite each other [so one could not see into his neighbor’s tent]. He said: These people are worthy of having the Divine Presence rest upon them. (Bava Batra 60a)
