Balak

Bilam and Abraham

The Sages saw Bilam as a symbol and a paradigm of moral turpitude, and presented his corrupt qualities as the polar opposite of the elevated character traits of Abraham our patriarch.

Anyone who possesses these three attributes is among the disciples of Abraham our patriarch, and anyone who possesses these three other attributes is among the disciples of the wicked Bilam. One who possesses contentedness with his lot, humility, and the absence of hedonism is among the disciples of Abraham our patriarch. One who possesses a lack of contentedness with his lot, arrogance, and hedonism is among the disciples of the wicked Bilam.

What is the difference between disciples of Abraham our patriarch and disciples of the wicked Bilam? Disciples of Abraham our patriarch enjoy this world and inherit the World to Come…but disciples of the wicked Bilam inherit Gehenna and descend into the pit of destruction. (Mishna Avot 5:19)
