Korah

The Wise among Women Builds Her House

At the beginning of the Torah portion, On son of Pelet is listed as one of the adherents of Korah, but in the account of the disputants’ punishment his name is not mentioned. According to the Sages, the wife of On son of Pelet convinced him to withdraw from the dispute, thereby saving him with her actions.

Rav said: The wife of On son of Pelet saved him. She said to him: How will you benefit from being part of Korah’s group? If Moses is the master, you are the disciple, and if Korah is the master, you are the disciple. He said to her: What can I do? I was part of the plot and I took an oath to stay with them. She said to him: I know that the entire congregation is holy, as it is written: “The entire congregation, all of them are holy” (Numbers 16:3). She said to him: Sit, and I will save you. She gave him wine, got him drunk, and lay him down inside. She sat at the entrance and loosened her hair [as though she were getting ready to bathe]. Anyone who came saw her and turned back in modesty. In the meantime, before On awoke, they were swallowed.… That is the meaning of what is written: “The wise among women builds her house” (Proverbs 14:1). This is a reference to the wife of On son of Pelet. (Sanhedrin 109b)
