Korah

The Earth’s Opening

Korah’s punishment was extraordinary: The earth opened and swallowed Korah, his cohorts, and their property. The Sages disagree with regard to how exactly this transpired, and concerning whether one breach or several opened in the earth.

“The earth opened its mouth” (Numbers 16:32). Rabbi Yehuda said: At that moment, several mouths opened in the earth, as it is stated: “That the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them…in the midst of all Israel” (Deuteronomy 11:6). Rabbi Nehemya said: But isn’t it written: “The earth opened its mouth” [in the singular]? Rabbi Yehuda said to him: How do I realize the meaning of: “In the midst of all Israel”? This means that the earth became like a funnel, and wherever in the camp any of them was, he would roll and descend and come with Korah. In that way you have realized the meaning of: “In the midst of all Israel,” and you have realized the meaning of: “The earth opened its mouth.” (Bemidbar Rabba 18)
