The Graves of the PatriarchsThe Torah relates that the spies reached Hebron. The Sages infer from the verses that Caleb alone went there, to pray for mercy so that he would not be tempted to follow the evil advice of his fellow spies.
“They ascended in the South, and they came [vayavo] until Hebron” (Numbers 13:22). The verse should have stated: Vayavo’u [in the plural. Why does it state “vayavo” in the singular?]. Rava says: This teaches that Caleb separated himself from the advice of the spies and he went and prostrated himself at the graves of the patriarchs. He said to them: My forefathers, pray for mercy for me so that I will be saved from the advice of the spies.
