The Restoration of the Divine Presence to This WorldThe Torah portion tells of the dedication of the Tabernacle and the bringing of the offerings donated by the princes of Israel.
According to the Sages, in the wake of human sin, the Divine Presence ascended to the upper heavens. It then gradually returned to the lower world thanks to the actions of the righteous. The establishment of the Tabernacle was the climax of its process of return to this world.
Rabbi Shmuel bar Nahman said: When the Holy One, Blessed be He, created the world, He desired to have a residence in the world below just as there is [one for Him] in the world above. He created man and commanded him: “The Lord God commanded the man, saying: From every tree of the garden you may eat. But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it” (Genesis 2:16–17), but Adam violated His command. The Holy One, Blessed be He, said to him: I so much desired to have a residence in the world below like I have in the world above, and I commanded you one matter and you did not observe it. Immediately, the Holy One, Blessed be He, raised His Divine Presence to the first heaven…. Cain went and killed Abel; immediately He raised His Divine Presence to the second heaven [and so forth, after further sins of humanity, until the Divine Presence was in the seventh, highest, heaven].…
Once He brought Abraham to the world, Abraham accumulated good deeds, and the Holy One, Blessed be He, descended from the seventh heaven to the sixth. Isaac extended his neck atop the altar when he was bound, and He descended from the sixth to the fifth [and so forth, after further righteous acts of humanity, until the Divine Presence was in the first, lowest, heaven].
Moses brought the Divine Presence down to this world…when the Tabernacle was established.
