The Importance of PeaceThe priestly blessing concludes with the blessing of peace: “And grant you peace.” The Sages are expansive in describing the virtue and the significance of peace.
Rabbi Elazar says: Great is peace, as it was only peace that the prophets implanted in the mouths of the people. Rabbi Shimon ben Halafta says: Great is peace, as peace is the only receptacle that receives blessing. Rabbi Elazar HaKappar says: Great is peace, as it is only peace that concludes all the blessings, as it is stated: “The Lord shall bless you, and keep you. The Lord shall shine His countenance to you, and be gracious to you. The Lord shall lift His countenance to you, and grant you peace” (Numbers 6:24–26). Rabbi Elazar son of Rabbi Elazar HaKappar says: Great is peace, as even if Israel is worshipping idols, as long as there is peace between them, the Omnipresent says, as it were: The adversary cannot touch them…. Great is peace, and dispute is reviled. Great is peace, as even at a time of war, peace is necessary, as it is stated: “When you approach a city to wage war against it, you shall call to it for peace” (Deuteronomy 20:10)…. Great is peace, as the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, is peace, as the verse states: “Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and he called it: The Lord is peace” (Judges 6:24).
