Measure for MeasureThe sota rite is structured measure for measure, with the woman’s punishment in line with her sin. The Sages detail additional cases where this principle is manifest, for good and for bad.
With the measure that a person measures, he himself is measured. The sota adorned herself to perform a transgression; therefore, the Omnipresent decreed that she be rendered unattractive. She exposed herself to perform a transgression, as she stood in places where she would be noticed by potential adulterers; therefore, the Omnipresent decreed that her body be publicly exposed. She began her transgression with her thigh and afterward with her stomach [i.e., her sexual organs]; therefore, the thigh is smitten first and then the stomach, and the rest of her entire body does not escape punishment. Samson followed his eyes [by marrying unsuitable women because he was taken by their appearance]; therefore, the Philistines gouged out his eyes…. Absalom was exceedingly proud of his hair; therefore, he was hanged by his hair (see II Samuel 18)…. Likewise with regard to good deeds. Miriam waited for the baby Moses for one hour; therefore, the Israelites delayed their travels in the wilderness for seven days [to wait for her to be healed from her leprosy].
