You Shall Support Him

The Torah commands us to support those whose financial situation deteriorates. The Sages underscored that one should assist him even before he loses everything.

“And if your brother should become poor, and his means fail with you, you shall support him” (Leviticus 25:35) – do not allow him to collapse. To what is the poor person comparable? He is comparable to a heavy burden on a donkey. While the burden is still in place, one can hold it and stabilize it. If it falls to the ground, even five people will be unable to lift it. [Similarly, as long as a poor person remains solvent, it is possible to support him with relative ease. But once he loses everything, it will be much more difficult to provide him with the support that he needs.] (Yalkut Shimoni, Behar 1:665)
