Jacob’s Funeral Procession

The Torah describes the dignified funeral procession that Joseph and his brothers conducted for Jacob. The Sages describe the mourning and the eulogy, and tell of Esau’s demand to be buried in the burial plot designated for Jacob.

“They came to the threshing floor of Atad” (Genesis 50:10) – is there a threshing floor for the thorn bush [atad], which does not produce anything edible? The verse teaches that those who participated in the procession ultimately surrounded Jacob’s coffin with crowns, like a threshing floor that is surrounded by thorn bushes. This happened because the children of Esau, the children of Ishmael, and the children of Ketura, Abraham’s wife (see 25:1)…all of them came to wage war against Jacob’s family. Once they saw Joseph’s crown suspended from Jacob’s coffin, each of them took his crown and suspended it from Jacob’s coffin. The Sages taught: Thirty-six crowns were suspended from Jacob’s coffin. Once they reached the Cave of Makhpela, Esau came and delayed them from burying Jacob. He said to them: This place is described as “Mamre, Kiryat Ha’arba, which is Hebron” (35:27).
