Vayeshev

The Imprisonment of the Butler and the Baker

After Joseph was thrown into prison in the wake of being accused by Potiphar’s wife of attempting to rape her, God arranged matters and incited a new scandal in Egyptian high society, so that people would no longer speak of the episode involving Joseph.

“She called to the people of her household, and spoke to them, saying: See, he brought to us a Hebrew man to ridicule us; he came to me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice” (Genesis 39:14). She introduced talk of Joseph into everyone’s mouth. The Holy One, blessed be He, said: It is preferable that they turn against each other, and not turn to slander this righteous man. That is what is written: “It was after these matters; the butler of the king of Egypt and the baker sinned [against their master]” (40:2) [providing the Egyptians with a new scandal to discuss]. What was the crime of the butler? A fly was found in Pharaoh’s drink. What was the crime of the baker? A fly was found in Pharaoh’s pastry. That is what is written: “The butler of the king of Egypt and the baker sinned against their master.” Their crimes occurred during their service of their master. (Yalkut Shimoni, Vayeshev 1:146)
