Places of Irrefutable OwnershipThe Torah portion relates that Jacob purchased a tract of the field adjacent to the city of Shekhem from its residents, where he had pitched his tent when he arrived at the place. Years later, his son Joseph was buried there. This tract of land, as well as two other places in the Land of Israel, are described by the Sages as places whose ownership is irrefutable.
“He purchased a tract of the field [that is in Shekhem]” (Genesis 33:19). This is one of three sites concerning which the nations of the world are unable to defraud the Jewish people and say to them: You stole them. These are: The Cave of Makhpela, Joseph’s Tomb, and the Holy Temple. The Cave of Makhpela: The verse relates that “Abraham weighed for Efron the silver…four hundred silver shekels” (23:16). The Holy Temple: The verse relates that “David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred gold shekels by weight” (I Chronicles 21:25). Joseph’s Tomb: The verse relates that “he purchased a tract of the field…for one hundred kesita” (Genesis 33:19).
