When Jacob arrived at the home of Laban his uncle, Laban hurried to meet him, embraced him, and kissed him. According to the Sages, Laban’s motivation was not pure; in fact, he was interested in the possessions that he assumed Jacob brought with him.
“It was when Laban heard the news of Jacob, his sister’s son, he ran to meet him” (Genesis 29:13). Laban said to himself: Eliezer was one with flawed lineage in the house of Abraham, and it is written concerning him: “The servant took ten camels” (24:7). This one, who is his beloved of the house of Isaac, all the more so that he will have possessions with him. When Laban did not see Jacob’s satchel, “he embraced him” (29:13). He said to himself: Perhaps he has dinars stored in his belt, and embraced him to check. When Laban did not find anything, “he kissed him” (29:13). He said to himself: Perhaps he has gems stored in his mouth, and kissed him to check. (BereshitRabba [Theodor-Albeck] 70)
