In order that Jacob would resemble his twin, Rebecca clothed Jacob in “the fine garments of Esau” (Genesis 27:15), which were the garments that Esau would wear when he would appear before Isaac. The Sages learn from here the exceptional manner in which Esau honored his father.
“Rebecca took the fine garments of Esau, her elder son” (27:15). Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel said: I would serve and honor my father all my days, but I did not serve him one-hundredth of how Esau served his father. When I would serve my father, I would serve him wearing dirty garments, but when I would leave to travel, I would leave wearing clean garments. But Esau, when he would serve his father, he would serve him only while wearing regal garments. Esau said: It is not befitting the honor due my father to serve him wearing anything other than regal garments. (BereshitRabba 65)
