Isaac Was Consoled over the Passing of His MotherIsaac’s marriage to Rebecca brought him tranquility and consolation after mourning the death of his mother. The Sages draw insight concerning the emotional growth that one undergoes upon his marriage.
“Isaac was comforted after his mother” (Genesis 24:67). Rabbi Yosei says: He mourned for his mother for three years. After three years, he took Rebecca and forgot the mourning over his mother. From here you learn: Until a man takes a wife, his love is directed toward his parents. Once a man marries, his love is redirected toward his wife, as it is stated: “Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother, and he shall cleave to his wife” (2:24). Does a man leave the mitzva of giving honor to his parents? He is still obligated to honor his parents, but his profound love cleaves to his wife, as it is stated: “And he shall cleave to his wife” (2:24).
