The Sages describe the great sadness of Abraham and Isaac in the moments preceding the binding, and also the shock and weeping of the heavenly angels.
Abraham’s eyes were focused on Isaac’s eyes, and Isaac’s eyes were focused on the heavens of the heavens, and tears were dropping and falling from Abraham’s eyes until [Isaac] was entirely flooded with tears. Abraham said to him: Since you began with a quarter log of your blood, your Creator will arrange for you a different offering in your stead. At that moment [Isaac] opened his mouth wide, crying, and bellowed a great roar. His eyes were blinking intensely and were looking to the Divine Presence, and he raised his voice, and said: “I lift my eyes to the mountains; from where will my help come? My help is from the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalms 121:1–2). At that moment there was a fulfillment of the verse: “Behold, their angels cry out outside, the messengers of peace weep bitterly” (Isaiah 33:7). The ministering angels stood in rows in the sky, and said to one another: See, the individual is slaughtering and the individual is being slaughtered. The angels said to God: If Isaac is killed who will recite before You on the sea: “This is my God and I will glorify Him” (Exodus 15:2)? And what will You do with regard to the oath You made to Abraham: “So shall be your descendants” (Genesis 15:5)? Immediately Abraham heard a call: “Do not extend your hand to the lad” (22:12).
