Noah and his family spent a year in the ark with many and various living beings. The Sages describe their daily care for the creatures.
What would Noah feed them? Rabbi Akiva says: He would feed them all, whether domesticated animal, people, undomesticated animal, or fowl, a cake of dried figs, like that which is stated: “And it shall be for you and for them for food” (Genesis 6:21). What is the item that people, as well as domesticated animal, undomesticated animal, and fowl, eat from it? This is a cake of dried figs. But the Rabbis say: No. Rather, each and every species would eat the food to which it was accustomed: The camel ate straw, the donkey ate barley, the elephant ate vines, and the ostrich ate glass. Alternatively…there is an animal that would eat at the first hour of the day, and there is an animal that would eat at the second hour of the day, and there is an animal that would eat at the third of the day, and there is an animal that would eat at the call of the rooster. The Sages say: During the twelve months that Noah stayed in the ark he did not have even a bit of sleep, neither during the day nor during the night, as he was busy feeding the creatures that were with him…. One time, Noah was late in feeding the lion, and the lion bit him and Noah emerged from the encounter limping. (Tanĥuma [Buber], Noah; Tanĥuma, Noah)
