Noah

Falsehood and Oblivion Seek Refuge in the Ark

The Torah relates that Noah took male and female from every species of living beings so that every species would exist after the flood. The Sages elaborate on that idea and describe how it was not only living beings, but also abstract ideas such as falsehood and oblivion that sought refuge in Noah’s Ark.

“Two at a time they came to Noah” (Genesis 7:9). Falsehood came and sought to enter the ark. Noah said to him: You may enter only if you find a spouse to marry. Falsehood encountered Oblivion. Oblivion said to him: Where are you coming from? Falsehood said to her: From Noah, as I went to him and sought to enter the ark but he did not let me. Rather, he told me: If you have a spouse you may enter. If you wish, you will be my spouse. Oblivion said to him: And what will you give me? Falsehood answered: I will agree with you that everything I earn, you take. They agreed that everywhere that Falsehood would earn, Oblivion would take. Both of them entered the ark. Once they emerged after the flood, Falsehood would go and earn, and Oblivion would immediately take everything. Falsehood came and said to her: Where is everything that I collected? Oblivion said to him: Didn’t you agree with me that everything that you earn I take? Falsehood had no response. (Midrash on Psalms, 7)
