Betzalel and Oholiav

Alongside Betzalel, who was from the tribe of Judah, Oholiav son of Ahisamakh from the tribe of Dan was appointed to assist Betzalel in the construction project. Representatives of these two tribes specifically – the most and least significant among them – were chosen so that no person would be arrogant on the basis of his origins.

Rabbi Hanina ben Pazi said: There is no tribe superior to the tribe of Judah, and there is no tribe inferior to the tribe of Dan, who was born from Bilha, one of the maidservants; and what is written in his regard? “And the sons of Dan: Hushim” (Genesis 46:23). The Holy One, blessed be He, said: Let the tribe of Judah come and join the tribe of Dan, so the Israelites will not demean him, and so that no man will be arrogant, because great and small are equal before the Omnipresent. Betzalel was from Judah and Oholiav from Dan, and [yet Oholiav] joined Betzalel. (Shemot Rabba 40)
