A Remedy for the Sin

The Tabernacle demonstrates God’s forgiving the Israelites for the sin of the Golden Calf.

“They shall make for Me a sanctuary, and I will dwell among them” (Exodus 25:8). When was this passage concerning the Tabernacle said to Moses? It was said on Yom Kippur itself [when the second tablets were given to Moses in place of the tablets that he shattered in the wake of the sin of the Golden Calf]. This is so even though the recording of the passage about the Tabernacle in the Torah precedes the recording of the event of the Calf. Rabbi Yehuda son of Rabbi Shalom said: The verses of the Torah are not ordered chronologically. [The following explains] why the Tabernacle is called: “The Tabernacle of testimony” (38:21): Because it is testimony for all humankind that the Holy One, blessed be He, rests His presence in the Israelites’ Temple, [and forgave them for their sin]. The Holy One, blessed be He, said: Let the gold that is used in the construction and vessels of the Tabernacle come and atone for the gold with which the Calf was formed. (Tanĥuma, Teruma)
