I Am at the Sea and I Am at Sinai

The Creator reveals Himself to his people with different techniques and with emphasis on different aspects of divine providence. The Ten Commandments begin with a declaration that all these are merely different manifestations of the one and only God.

“I am the Lord your God, who took you out of the land of Egypt” (Exodus 20:2). Why was that said? Because God was revealed at the sea as a hero waging wars, as it is stated: “The Lord is a warrior” (15:3), and he was revealed on Mount Sinai as an elder filled with compassion…. In order not to provide substantiation for the nations of the world to say: There are two authorities, one who wages war and the other who acts with compassion, to counter that, God stated: “I am the Lord your God.” I am the God who acted in Egypt, I am the God who acted at the sea, I am the God who acts at Sinai, I am the God who acted in the past, I am the God who will act in the future, I am the God who acts in this world, I am the God who acts in the World to Come.
