The Taste of the MannaThe taste of the manna, the food that God provided for the Israelites in the wilderness, is described in the verses in various ways. The Sages relate that the manna did not have one definitive taste; rather, its taste changed according to the one consuming it and his situation.
“And its taste was like the taste of a cake moist with oil [leshad hashemen]” (Exodus 11:8). Rabbi Abbahu said: Just as with regard to milk from the breast [shad] a baby tastes several flavors in it, so too the manna. Whenever the Israelites ate it, they would find several flavors in it. Some say: The manna had the characteristic of an actual demon [shed]. Just as a demon transforms into several shapes and colors, so too, manna is transformed into several flavors.
