Haazinu

Rebellion from Circumstances of Tranquility

Moses prophesies about the corruption of Israel after they will enter the land: “Yeshurun grew fat and kicked” (Deuteronomy 32:15). It is specifically the tranquil and satiated person who is apt to rebel against God.

“Yeshurun grew fat and kicked” (32:15). To the degree that there is satiation, there is rebellion.

Likewise you find in the generation of the flood, who rebelled against the Holy One, blessed be He, only from a situation of eating, drinking, and tranquility…Likewise we find with the people of the Tower of Babel, who rebelled against the Holy One, blessed be He, only from circumstances of tranquility…Likewise we find with the residents of Sodom, who rebelled only from a situation of eating…Likewise you find in the generation of the wilderness, who rebelled only from a situation of eating and drinking. (Sifrei Devarim, Haazinu 518)
