The Matter Is Very Near to YouThe Torah is not in the heavens or across the sea: “Rather, the matter is very near to you” (Deuteronomy 30:14). The Sages likened this to a princess who was not allowed to meet with any man except for one.
“Rather, the matter is very near to you.” Rav Shmuel bar Nahmani said: To what can this matter be compared? It can be compared to a princess whom no one knew. The king had one man whom he loved and who would enter to see him at all hours, even when his daughter was with him. The king said to the man: See how fond I am of you, as there is no one who knows my daughter, yet she is standing before you.
So the Holy One, blessed be He, said to Israel: See how fond I am of you, as in My palace there is no one who knows the Torah, yet I gave it to you, as it is stated: “It is vanished from the eyes of all living and hidden from the birds of the heavens” (Job 28:21), but as for you: “It is not hidden from you” (Deuteronomy 30:11); rather, “the matter is very near to you” (30:14). The Holy One, blessed be He, said to Israel: My children, if you keep the Torah close to you, I will proclaim that you are close to Me.
