Justice, Justice You Shall Pursue

One must actively seek opportunities to perform acts of charity and kindness. He must also encourage others to perform them as well, and not be satisfied with what he does on his own.

The verse states: “Justice, justice you shall pursue” (Deuteronomy 16:20). I might have thought that a person does not need to give charity unless the charity collectors come and tell him to give. From where is it derived that even if they do not come and tell him to give charity that one should nevertheless pursue them and give? The verse states: “Justice, justice you shall pursue.”…

If one did not encounter the opportunity to perform acts of charity, but rather the charity collectors demanded that he go and request that others perform charity and he did so…he is ascribed credit as though he gave from his own property, as it is stated: “Justice, justice you shall pursue,” teaching that one must pursue others to perform acts of charity and kindness.

What reward does he receive for this? “He who pursues righteousness and kindness will find life, righteousness, and honor” (Proverbs 21:21). (Midrash Tanna’im, Devarim 16)
