The Members of Your Household and the Members of My Household

Among the charity obligations mentioned in this Torah portion, there is a special mitzva to give produce to the Levites, who have no agricultural portion in the land, as well as to bring joy on the festivals to the impoverished, the orphans, and the widows. According to the Sages, these are the members of God’s household. If we provide for them generously, God will act with us in the same way.

The Holy One, blessed be He, said: You have four members of your household: your son, your daughter, your slave, and your maidservant. I, too, have four members of My household: the Levite, the stranger, the orphan, and the widow. All of them appear in one verse: “You shall rejoice on your festival, you, and your son, and your daughter, and your slave, and your maidservant, and the Levite, and the stranger, and the orphan, and the widow, who are within your gates” (Deuteronomy 16:14). The Holy One, blessed be He, said: I told you that you should bring joy to My household and to yours on the festivals that I gave you. If you do that, I too will bring joy to My household and to yours. (Yalkut Shimoni, Re’eh 1:897)
