Give Tithes So That You Will Become WealthyIn this Torah portion, several types of tithes that must be separated from produce are listed: tithes given to Levites; to the poor; and second tithe, which one takes to Jerusalem to eat there. The Sages teach that meticulousness regarding tithes will not decrease a person’s property; on the contrary, it will cause one’s property to be blessed.
“You shall tithe [aser te’aser]” (Deuteronomy 14:22). Give tithes [aser] so that you will become wealthy [titasher].
Rabbi Yohanan came upon the young son of Reish Lakish, and said to him: Recite for me the verse that you learned today. Reish Lakish’s son said to him: “You shall tithe [aser te’aser].” The boy asked: And what is the meaning of “you shall tithe”? Rabbi Yohanan said to him: Give tithes [aser] so that you will become wealthy [titasher]. The boy said to him: From where do you derive that this is so? Rabbi Yohanan said to him: Go and test it.
The boy said to him: Is it permitted to test the Holy One, blessed be He? But isn’t it written: “You shall not test the Lord your God” (6:16)? Rabbi Yohanan said to him: Rabbi Hoshaya said: This applies to all matters except for tithes, as it is stated: “Bring all the tithe…test Me now with this, said the Lord of hosts, if I will not open for you the windows of the heavens, and pour out an endless [ad beli dai] blessing for you” (Malachi 3:10). What is the meaning of: “Ad beli dai”? Rami bar Hama said that Rav said that it means: The blessing will be so plentiful until [ad] your lips will be worn out [yivlu, which includes the same Hebrew letters as beli] from saying “enough [dai].”
