The Temple

Divine Revelation

God brought His Shekhina, the revelation of the Divine, into the lower realm. At the time of the Creation, the main presence of the Shekhina was on earth, but after the sin of Adam, the first human, it withdrew, and only once the Temple was built did it return to its place there.

When the world was created, the main presence of the Shekhina was in the lower realm:

One should know that at the Creation, the main presence of the Shekhina was in the lower realm. Everything was created with a clear order and priority – the upper realm [heaven] was allocated to the higher creations and the lower realm [earth] was allocated to the lower creations. When the Shekhina was infused into the lower realm, heaven and earth were united…. God was therefore present in perfect balance between the upper and lower realms.

After the sin of the first man, the Shekhina departed, and it was partially restored when Moses built the Tabernacle:

When the first human sinned, the presence [of the Shekhina] was damaged and the spiritual conduits [for receiving abundance from above] were broken. The Shekhina departed, and that which had been bound together [the upper and lower realms] was separated. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob came and began to draw the Shekhina back toward the lower realm…. In their days, it hovered in the air [between worlds] but did not find a proper resting place on earth as it had at the time of Creation. Moses, our teacher, came along, together with all of Israel, and they made the Tabernacle and its vessels. They repaired the damaged [spiritual] conduits, restored the Divine Presence and reconnected to the abundance from above, drawing once again “living waters” from their sources [in Heaven], and returning the Shekhina to its dwelling in the lower realm. But this was now in a [mobile] tent, and not imbued in the earth as it had been at the time of Creation. This is the underlying mystical meaning of, “They shall make for Me a sanctuary, and I will dwell among them” (Exodus 25:8).

The building of the Temple by King David and King Solomon restored the Shekhina to its place on earth:

David planned the entire design of the Temple, and the significance of each and every item, according to the word of God. It was all in the image of the heavenly structure, [in order to create] a seat and dwelling place for the Shekhina. Subsequently, Solomon came and built the Temple, arranging the entire structure as David, his father, had planned, and the Shekhina descended and dwelled in the permanent Temple…. The Shekhina returned to its resting place on earth, in the permanent Temple. Consequently, the [spiritual] sources and conduits were restored, all pouring blessing into the Temple.
