Hope and Despair

Hope

God is omnipotent, and He will save the nation of Israel as well as each individual. When a person prays for what he hopes for, he shows that his hope is sincere. This will also enable him to receive that which he hopes to receive.

The [appropriate] hope and anticipation with regard to the collective is that a person should always express hope to God that He should save his nation as a whole and their lot should be positive…. As for the individual, he should hope that God, in His mercy and great kindness, will lead him on an upright path, save him from evil, and [help] him choose what is good and proper for himself…. When many difficult troubles present themselves to him, he should hold fast to his simplicity. He should increase his courage, and hope to God; thinking, knowing, and understanding that nothing holds God back from giving him what he asks for and fulfilling his request, for His abilities are limitless…. When a person prays for that which he hopes for, that indicates that his hope is sincere. He will then be able to receive the kindness for which he hoped. (Rav Yosef Albo, Sefer HaIkkarim 4:48)
