Resurrection of the Dead

Will Family Relations Be Restored?

The only familial relations that will remain at the time of the resurrection are those based on the soul. Therefore, the relationships between parents and children will remain, and there will be an obligation to honor one’s parents:

Nonetheless, the connection of children to their father and mother will not cease. Even after the resurrection, all will be obligated to honor their parents. This is because the bodies that will be revived include within them the aspects of the soul that remained in the grave hovering over the bones, as we said above. This is the soul of childhood, which was drawn down to a child by his father and mother. The obligation to honor parents is not specifically because [of their role in] the creation of the body, but because they drew down the child’s soul through their union. (Rabbi Yosef Ĥayyim, Responsa Rav Pe’alim II, Sod Yesharim 2)
