A person might descend to this world in several reincarnations, each time perfecting a different part of his soul. Each body will be revived along with the parts of his soul that he perfected while inhabiting that body.
If [a person descended to this world] once, and attained only the level of nefesh but did not merit to fully perfect his soul before he died, then since that first body did not complete the improvement of all aspects of the nefesh, it will be resurrected only with the specific aspect of the nefesh that it did improve…. Then the aspects of the nefesh that were improved by the second body, along with the entire ruah and neshama, will be with the second body at the time of the resurrection. The first body will have no share in the ruaĥ or neshama, but it will share with the second body part of the nefesh, according to the parts of the nefesh that it improved. The other parts of the nefesh will be with the second body. (Rabbi Ĥayyim Vital, Sha’ar Hagilgulim, Introduction 4)
