The Written Torah and the Oral Torah

We received from God both the Written Torah and the Oral Torah. The Sages of every generation are responsible to find the words of the Written Torah that allude to the content of the Oral Torah. The Written Torah has been compared to a special chest in which each drawer and compartment must be filled with something specific. The wise son must find a place in the chest for each item.

The Torah – the wonderful treasure chest:

The Written Torah is like a beautiful and ornate chest, with hundreds and thousands of compartments and sub-compartments. Each compartment is unique in its length, width, and height, and each is crafted with wondrous wisdom. Each is constructed to hold various types of rings, bracelets, and earrings made with precious stones and pearls, as well as to hold different types of royal treasures; everything according to its dimensions, quantity, and value. The king gave his only son the wonderful chest to study, so he would come to understand the proper use of each and every compartment. He also gave him various types of jewelry crafted with precious stones and pearls, and many different types of royal treasures, so his son would analyze on his own how to place each type [of treasure] in its proper compartment.

The Sages of the Oral Torah fill the compartments of the Written Torah:

So too God, may He be blessed, first gave the Written Torah to His nation Israel, and with great wisdom He crafted various compartments and storage places within each and every verse. Then He conveyed to them the Oral Torah, which is the received transmission that is more expansive than the sea. He commanded them to toil very hard in order to discern an appropriate place within the Written Torah for each and every part of the Oral Torah, such that all of the compartments and storage places that he crafted in the Written Torah would be filled with the Oral Torah.
