One of the great wonders of Creation is that God merged a spiritual soul with a physical body and made them interdependent:

Observe and consider the fundamental connection of man’s soul to his body. You will see that a person’s body is made up of various elements of disparate natures. The Creator, may He be elevated, combined them through His power and connected them in His wisdom, making them into a body that is unified in its appearance yet diverse in nature. To that He combined an ethereal spiritual entity which is similar to the higher spiritual beings [the angels]. This entity is a person’s soul which He bound together with the body in a manner appropriate for these two extremely [different elements]: the spirit of life [of the soul connects with the body’s] natural heat, blood, sinews, nerves, and arteries. He also gave these a means to preserve and protect them from harm: The flesh, bones, tissue, skin, hair, and fingernails all protect, cover, and guard [a person from harm]. (Rabbeinu Baĥya ibn Pakuda, Ĥovot HaLevavot 2:5)
