The Months of the Year

Iyar

Iyar is a month of preparation for the receiving of the Torah. On each day of the month we count the omer and move forward, day by day improving our character traits and spiritual qualities. The improvement of character traits is the healing for the soul, and therefore this is an especially good time for repentance and healing.

It is written in the book Ohev Yisrael that this month is [particularly] suitable for repentance. There is an allusion to this fact in that the world sees it as a time of healing, and the main thing is the healing of the soul… [The prayer said after the counting of the omer includes the petition] “to purify us from our external layers and from our impurities.” (Rabbi Tzadok HaKohen of Lublin, Peri Tzaddik, Vayikra, Rosh Hodesh Iyar 4)
