Tisha BeAv

Shabbat Nahamu andSheva De’nehemta

The seven Shabbatot following Tisha BeAv are called the Shabbatot of consolation, and the first of them is called Shabbat Nahamu.

The name Shabbat Nahamu comes from the opening words of the haftara that is read on the first Shabbat after Tisha BeAv: “Comfort [nahamu], comfort My people, will say your God” (Isaiah 40:1). The verses of the haftara deal with the consolation of the people of Israel after their redemption from exile. This haftara is the first of a series of seven haftarot, known as sheva de’nehemta, the seven [haftarot] of consolation,” which are read on the seven Shabbatot between Tisha BeAv and the end of the year. All of these haftarot are from the book of Isaiah, and they each deal with the consolation of the people of Israel after the exile.
