Children on Shabbat

Miscellaneous

There are various other halakhic questions that can arise with regard to child care. Here are guidelines for a few common situations:

A folding highchair, playpen, and a baby carriage may be opened on Shabbat. It is also permitted to attach a food tray to a highchair, if the tray is normally detached and reattached. With regard to opening a canopy that is connected to a baby carriage to protect the child from sun or rain, opinions are divided, and therefore it is recommended to consult with a rabbi on this matter.

If a rubber mat or sheet became wet from urine and the like, it is permitted to pour water on it in order to clean it. This dispensation does not apply to clothing. Even so, one may not rub its sides together, nor rub it with a wet cloth.

If a small child gets lost and no one knows who his relatives are, and the child himself is frightened and panicky, one should call the police and desecrate Shabbat in order to return the child to his family.
