Children on Shabbat

Washing Babies

In general, bathing on Shabbat is subject to various restrictions, especially with regard to the use of hot water (see the section dealing with hygiene on Shabbat), but in the case of infants, the Sages were lenient and permitted one to wash them under certain conditions.

If necessary, a baby may be bathed in hot water that was heated before Shabbat, or in water heated by a solar water heater. Likewise, at a time of need, bath salts may be added to a baby bath.

If a baby’s body temperature has risen and he must be cooled in a lukewarm bath, one may pour boiling water into the cold water, so that the water will not be too cold.

The use of wet wipes on Shabbat is permitted according to most opinions.
